Nurse Aide

 

Overview

This course focuses on preparing students for a career in the medical field as a nurse aide. You will study normal growth and development, simple body structure and function, and medical terminology. Students will also be introduced to microbes and diseases, patient-nurse aide relationships, taking and recording of vital signs, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bathing, feeding, dressing, and transferring of patients.

The course also emphasizes skilled training in areas such as catheter care, range of motion, bowel and bladder training, care of the dying, care of Dementia and Alzheimer patient, admission and discharge procedures, and communication skills with the patient, co-worker, and employers.

Students will study diseases and body systems as related to skilled care, long-term care, the chronically ill, and the elderly. Clinical Instruction is provided in a licensed long-term care nurse (LTC) or rehabilitation facility as part of the course.

 

 

Upon successful completion of the nurse aide program, the student is eligible to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NNAAP) examination, which could lead to employment as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in a variety of healthcare facilities.

Program Description

This is a 5 week course that includes: textbooks, scrubs, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, certification exam fee, CPR certification, and program completion pin.

Program Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to:

  • Sit for the NNAAP Examination
  • Demonstrate communication and interaction skills on a one-to-one basis with their clients
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to their resident’s emotional, social, and mental health needs through effective interaction and communication
  • Assist clients in attaining and maintaining as much functional independence as possible
  • Demonstrate skills in observation and documentation needed to participate in the care of their clients’ health, physical condition, and well-being
  • Apply professional, legal and ethical guidelines to the care of patients with health alterations.
  • Recognize the need to report vital information to appropriate supervisor
  • Complete assigned task and accept assigned patient care within scope of practice
  • Describe standard precautions for the purpose of infection control
  • Demonstrate how to perform CPR on an adult client
  • Provide safety and preventive measures in the care of residents

NEW! – The Nurse Aide Program has started a new initiative that provides students who have accelerated in the program with a Gold Seal Letter of Recommendation to bring with you and present to perspective employers during the interview process. The letter of recommendation will include documentation of the student’s sustained high performance in the program.

Throughout the training program all students will be given various opportunities to earn points towards receiving the Gold Seal Letter of Recommendation. They can accrue points through class participation, successful demonstration of skills, professionalism, professional dress and personal grooming, clinical performance and other assignments that the instructor deems fit to award points for.
